Learning and the Brain Conference Feb. 18-20
Martha will be presenting at the Learning & the Brain Conference in San Francisco - Feb. 18-20. This conference is co-sponsored by Harvard, Stanford, John Hopkins, the DANA Initiative and others... Martha's afternoon session on Feb. 19th is:
No Child Kept Behind: Discovering & Nurturing the Gifts Within Every Child

While federal mandates such as NCLB and the bulk of educational funding are directed at struggling students with inadequate test scores, our brightest and most creative students are lacking challenging, engaging, and appropriate classroom experiences. Many gifted and talented students may not be formally identified for specialized services (if available!), but they deserve our attention and nurturing. In this session, a veteran classroom teacher will share a variety of creative ways educators can discover the often hidden gifts and talents of many under-identified student populations. Using engaging curriculum and differentiated instructional strategies, that span a variety of levels, every student can be challenged! Even “twice-exceptional” students can have their talents nurtured while their learning disabilities are accommodated. Discover how to create a “brain-compatible” learning environment that reduces stress and maximizes learning. During this interactive, fast-paced session you will learn strategies to:

· DISCOVER: Informally identify students’ Multiple Intelligences (Gardner), five possible areas of “Over-Excitabilities” (Dabrowsky), and Wisdom, Intelligence & Creativity strengths (Sternberg).

· DESIGN: Orchestrate authentic, meaningful, first-hand learning experiences that will get students’ brains’ attention and demand engagement and thinking.

· DIFFERENTIATE: Create upper-tier learning tasks that expand and extend the basic curriculum with depth and complexity.

· DEVELOP: Provide on-going “Anchor Activities” to stimulate thinking and extend learning when students say, “I’m done. Now what?”

To recognize whether talent exists there must be opportunities for talent to emerge. Marcia Gentry, Purdue University, Gifted Child Quarterly Fall 2009
